The Communicator D2 Dual SATA HDD Dock with WiFi is a hard disk hub which lets you make use of all those old hard disks lying around from upgrades and repairs. I’ve been using one for a couple of months now and I’m very impressed so far with the functionality and robustness of the kit.

Hi the Winstars Communicator C2 does support 2.5/3.5 hard drives but only sata II the ide to sata adpter that comes with it is for 3.5 desktop hard drives only. The ide is 40 pin for desktops but for laptops it is 44pin ide and another adapter would to be supplied. You may need to read the manual to learn how to partition the drives if you’re changing their configurations and virtual drive settings on Windows Vista or 7, as it’s not easy to work out how to do that with the new Windows versions.

So far the unit has performed perfectly with backup from PC to hard disk as well as the One Touch Backup button feature which moves data from the first hard disk to the second without PC involvement. It’s fast and quiet, with only a faint blue flickering light indicating that data is being transferred.
The only thing that is a little strange is the fact that the on-board WiFi isn’t actually what you think it is. It will not give you wireless access to the data on the dock drives, it is actually designed to add WiFi functionality to any computer you attach it to which doesn’t already have a WiFi card installed. This makes it useful for older desktop computers without WiFi, but perhaps not so useful for laptops most of which now come with WiFi as standard. It’s a small thing, but a little confusing.
Apart from that, this is a great product, and something which is hugely valuable in terms of flexibility and longevity. I can see myself using it for a long time as a primary backup tool alongside the Drobo. Priced at $92.00. A useful review.
